It is a word

If merriam-webster says "There is such a word", than thats good enough for me.
it might not be a good word, but it is a word
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/irregardless
ir·re·gard·less
Pronunciation: \ˌir-i-ˈgärd-ləs\
Function: adverb
Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless
Date: circa 1912
nonstandard : regardless
usage: Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

So a web dictionary may call it a word (and only because so many fools use it) but that does not mean you were using said word correctly.

I suppose that is how language evolves.
I haven't much of an issue with "irregardless" being legitimized by some arbitrary (and apparently inbred), so-called authority such as a dictionary publisher; their just in it for the cabbage. So be it.
My problem is the accepted definition and implementation of said word.
When people (read: Adrienne) tell me that i'm irrational, i know exactly what they mean. I'm not rational.
When others comment on my reoccurring, irresponsible behavior, there isn't any great mystery as to what their getting at. I can be an overwhelming dumbass.
But, when someone (typically, imbecilic half-wits, who fancy themselves as part of the undumb) uses "irregardless" in conversation, they never mean "not regardless". Our trampled hero in this frivolous linguistic exercise is the prefix "ir".
Lets ensure that the baby isn't thrown out with the bath water. Next time some one gives our little buddy "ir" a grammatical kick to the nuts, stand up for him and tell that person just how stupid they are.

You forgot irregular, irreparable, and irrelevant, not to mention irritating and irksome (although those don't exactly follow the rules we're discussing here.)

That's because ir is not a prefix in those cases.
Adam, this is the first smile I've had all day. You should write.

I do of course fancy myself myself as being part of the undumb, yet as I'm debating the definition and usage of a self-admitted "bad word", that clearly has many more linguistically correct and grammatically superior substitutes.... But in case of a circumstance that the word come up again, here at least would be my own perceived definitions of it..
Lets say i've got a choice to make.. say, the red pill or the blue pill. and you recommend the blue one to me, but i already think i want the red one.
I could say...
Regarding your opinion, i'll take the blue one. -- IE. I heard your opinion and based my decision on it.
or...
Regardless of your opinion, I'll take the red one. -- IE. I heard your opinion, considered it, and still did the opposite.
or..
Irregardless of your opinion, I'll take the red one. -- IE. I didn't care about your opinion and just did what i wanted.
Though, grammatically incorrect, i think the intention of the double negative, instead of negating the negative as it should, acts to strengthen the negative.
Kind of like... if someone calls you dumb.. you're dumb. But if someone calls you a dumb-dumb, you're not smart, you're very dumb.

Yes i think he set himself as well. I dont know what sparked this debate but irregardless, it seems to serve as a platform for Adam to show his Nerdy side and Jeromy to use one of his 3900000 computers to research words. HMMMMMMM the Pierced man VS the self admitted dumbass! Let the games begin. Amuse me Jesters!
